The team of lawyers around partners Walter Van Steenbrugge and Christine Mussche defends perpetrators and victims and/or their relatives with an open mind. To their legal knowledge they add the benefit of other areas of expertise, including neurology, psychiatry, psychology and sociology, and they work together with traffic experts, toxicologists, medical specialists and accountants.
To clear away one preconception right at the start, this unit does not only deal with murder cases before the criminal court in which life imprisonment is at stake: our firm is just as passionate about defending those accused of traffic offences before the police court. Because even in those circumstances, the impact on your personal, professional or financial life can be huge. Don’t forget that you may be entitled to a free lawyer of your choice.
Contact us if you have been charged with or are the victim of, among other things:

The emphasis is always on respect for fundamental human rights – something we will champion fiercely but with flair. Criminal law is about people and their lives, from the smallest traffic offence to the most serious case, and whether you are a private individual or a businessperson.
Our fight to uphold human rights can take various different forms.

Don’t leave it too long
Whether you’re a victim or a perpetrator, getting a lawyer in good time can make a difference, even if it’s just for strategic advice without any legal proceedings being involved.
In Belgium you also have a right to legal counsel during or prior to a hearing, and we see in practice how valuable this is. We will help you during the criminal investigation or if you are summoned to a hearing by the police or the examining magistrate.
We can mediate for you with the perpetrator or victim, or approach the Public Prosecution Service regarding an out-of-court settlement.
After the legal proceedings, we will assist you in connection with the enforcement of your sentence, or if as the victim of a crime you want your voice to be heard in the sentence enforcement court.
Finally, our expertise can also be useful in the context of disciplinary proceedings, which sometimes result from criminal proceedings.
We represent clients in the police courts, correctional courts, courts of appeal and criminal courts throughout Belgium and abroad. At the highest national level we conduct proceedings before the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court. Our firm has several lawyers who are licensed to conduct criminal proceedings before the Court of Cassation. At the international level we can represent your interests before the European Court of Human Rights.
